This video lecture from Aldehydes and Ketones  (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers Cannizaro’s Reaction. It takes place in the absence of any alpha hydrogen atoms and is a disproportionation (self oxidation-reduction) reaction. Out of 2 molecules taking part in the reaction, one is oxidized to a carboxylic acid and the other is reduced into an alcohol. The detailed mechanism followed is explained in the lecture.
